Defect description

Fontaine Modification is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Navistar International 4300, 4400, 7300, 7400, and 7500 trucks; manufactured January 1, 2011 through January 9, 2013 and were modified to be able to be steered from either front seat. Certain steering assembly retaining clips may not be completely engaged, resulting in the clips coming loose.

Safety risk

Without a retaining clip, the steering may feel "loose" and be unresponsive which may increase steering difficulty and the likelihood of a vehicle crash.

Manufacturer remedy

Fontaine will notify owners and dealers will inspect each truck's steering cross shaft assembly. Any that are found defective will have the complete steering cross shaft assembly replaced, free of charge. The recall began on April 12, 2013. Owners may contact Fontaine at 1-800-366-8246.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
